Indonesia is the largest Muslim-majority country in the world, with around 240 million Muslims. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language and the medium of religious education across the archipelago.
Quranic literacy in Indonesia is notably high — most Indonesian Muslims can recite Arabic script — but comprehension of Arabic is far less common, so the translation is not a supplement to reading but the primary route to meaning for the majority.
Bahasa Indonesia has absorbed a large amount of Arabic religious vocabulary over centuries of Islamic scholarship in the region, which shortens the distance between the original and the translation for terms of worship and law.
The standard Indonesian translation was produced under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and is the version most Indonesian readers will recognise from printed mushafs, so consistency with it matters for a digital edition.
