India has one of the largest Muslim populations of any country. While Urdu has historically carried much of the religious literature of Indian Islam, a very large number of Indian Muslims — particularly outside the traditional Urdu-speaking regions — read Devanagari far more comfortably than Nastaliq.
Hindi and Urdu are closely related in speech and diverge chiefly in script and in their higher registers of vocabulary, where Urdu draws on Persian and Arabic and Hindi on Sanskrit. For a Quran translation this matters: a Hindi rendering must decide how much Arabic-derived religious vocabulary to retain against how much to translate into Sanskritic terms.
