Mohamed Siddiq Al-Minshawi belongs to the golden generation of Egyptian reciters alongside Abdul Basit and Al-Husary, and among them he is the one most often described in terms of feeling rather than technique.
His recitation carries a distinctive softness. Where Abdul Basit commands and Al-Husary instructs, Al-Minshawi seems to plead. Verses concerning the Hereafter in particular are delivered with an audible grief that many listeners find difficult to hear unmoved.
He came from a family of reciters and had memorised the Quran by eight. His Al-Mushaf Al-Mujawwad recordings remain among the most played in the Muslim world, and his murattal is a common choice for those who want classical quality at a pace suitable for following along.
He died at forty-nine, which is part of why his catalogue is smaller than his contemporaries'. What exists is exceptional.
