Quran Reciter

Mahmoud Khalil Al-Husary

محمود خليل الحصري

The reciter most recommended for learning tajweed, whose deliberate, exactingly correct murattal recitation is treated as a teaching standard.

If one reciter is to be recommended to someone learning to recite correctly, it is Mahmoud Khalil Al-Husary. His murattal recording is deliberate to the point of being pedagogical, and it is used as a reference by teachers worldwide.

Al-Husary was a scholar of the qira'at who recorded the Quran in multiple canonical readings — Hafs, Warsh and Qalun among them — an undertaking few reciters have attempted. He also produced a dedicated teaching recitation, slowed further and articulated with exaggerated precision, intended specifically for students.

The character of his recitation is restraint. Where others use melodic range, Al-Husary prioritises correctness: every rule of tajweed is observable, every elongation is measured, every letter emerges from its proper point of articulation. It is not the recitation most people reach for emotionally, and that is deliberate.

The practical method is to recite a verse after him, out loud, and compare. Errors that are invisible when reading silently become obvious immediately.
