Quran Reciter

Hani Ar-Rifai

هاني الرفاعي

Jeddah imam whose unhurried, precisely articulated Murattal is one of the most widely used recordings for Quran memorisation.

Sheikh Hani Ar-Rifai was born in Jeddah in 1974 and had memorised the Quran by the age of twelve. He studied Islamic studies at King Abdulaziz University and serves as an imam and khateeb in Jeddah, but it is his complete Murattal recording that carries his name beyond the city.

That recording is popular for a specific and slightly unglamorous reason: it is exceptionally easy to follow in a mushaf. The tempo barely varies from the first juz to the thirtieth, the pauses land consistently at the verse ends, and the articulation separates letters that beginners routinely blur — the difference between ض and ظ, or a clear qalqalah, is audible without having to listen for it.

His voice carries real feeling, and listeners often single out the emotion in it, but the delivery never trades clarity for effect. A verse is not stretched for atmosphere. That restraint is what makes the recording usable as a reference rather than only as something to listen to.

This is the recitation to choose when you are learning a passage by ear and intend to reproduce it. Pair it with a slower mujawwad reciter once the words are secure and you want to hear what the same verses sound like with the ornamentation added back.
