When Is Eid al-Fitr 2027?
Eid al-Fitr 2027 (1 Shawwal 1448 AH) is expected on Tuesday, March 9, 2027, if the Shawwal crescent is sighted on the evening of Monday, March 8. If the moon isn’t seen that night, Ramadan completes 30 days and Eid falls on Wednesday, March 10, 2027. The final date is confirmed by your country’s moon-sighting committee.
Why Can the Eid Date Differ by Country?
The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is lunar. Each month begins when the new crescent moon is seen, following the Prophet’s ﷺ instruction to fast when you see the moon and end the fast when you see it (Sahih al-Bukhari 1909). Some countries rely on local sighting, others on global sighting or astronomical calculation, so Eid can fall a day apart in different places. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Pakistan, the UK, France and North America may not all celebrate on the same day. If you’re in France, read our guide to Ramadan 2027 in France.
Sunnah Practices on Eid al-Fitr
These practices, taken from the Prophet’s ﷺ example, help you get the most from the day:
- Take a ghusl (ritual bath) early in the morning before going to the Eid prayer. If you need a refresher, see our step-by-step wudu guide.
- Eat dates before the prayer. The Prophet ﷺ would not leave for the Eid al-Fitr prayer until he had eaten some dates, and he ate an odd number (Sahih al-Bukhari 953).
- Wear your best clean clothes, and apply a pleasant fragrance (for men).
- Recite the takbir (“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah…”) from the sunset of the last day of Ramadan until the Eid prayer begins.
- Go to the Eid prayer by one route and return by another (Sahih al-Bukhari 986).
- Greet one another with “Eid Mubarak” or “Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum” (May Allah accept from us and from you). Learn more everyday Islamic phrases and their meanings.
- Visit family, maintain ties of kinship, and include those who are alone.
Note: Fasting on the day of Eid al-Fitr is not permitted. It is a day of celebration and gratitude.
Zakat al-Fitr: Purify Your Fast Before Eid
Zakat al-Fitr (Sadaqat al-Fitr) is due from every Muslim who has food beyond their needs for the day of Eid, including children. The head of the household pays it on behalf of their dependents.
- When to pay: Before the Eid prayer. Many scholars allow paying it a day or two earlier so it reaches people in need on time.
- How much: One sa’ of staple food (about 2.5–3 kg of wheat, rice or dates) per person, or its cash value where your local scholars permit it.
- Why it matters: It purifies the fast from idle talk and shortcomings, and makes sure people in need can celebrate Eid with dignity (Sunan Abi Dawud 1609).
After Eid: Keep Your Ramadan Habits Going
Ramadan builds strong habits: praying on time, reading the Quran daily and making regular dhikr. Here’s how to keep them going after Eid:
- Fast six days of Shawwal. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if they fasted the whole year (Sahih Muslim 1164).
- Keep a daily Quran goal. Even one page a day of the Quran keeps your connection alive. Make Fridays special with Surah Al-Kahf.
- Protect your five daily prayers with accurate prayer time reminders.
- Keep making dua, starting with the Dua for Success in Life and the Dua Before Sleeping.
