Surah Yaseen is the 36th chapter of the Holy Quran. It contains 83 verses, was revealed in Makkah, and is known throughout the Muslim world as the Heart of the Quran (قلب القرآن). Millions of Muslims recite it daily at Fajr, on Fridays, beside the ill, and for those who have passed.

But there is also a great deal of confusion about Surah Yaseen. Many widely circulated claims — reciting it 7 times for a specific benefit, 41 times for another are not supported by authentic Hadith. And many of the Hadiths quoted about its virtues carry varying degrees of authenticity that popular Islamic content rarely addresses.

This guide covers the real, Hadith-backed benefits of reading Surah Yaseen what scholars have authenticated, what is disputed, and what the scholarly consensus actually says. It also covers the best times to recite it, how to make it a daily habit, and how to listen to it recited by the world's greatest Qaris through the Islam365 app.

What Is Surah Yaseen?

Surah Yaseen is the 36th Surah of the Holy Quran, comprising 83 ayat (verses), 803 words, and 3,028 letters. It is a Makki Surah — revealed in Makkah before the Hijra — and its central themes are the truth of the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ, the reality of resurrection and the Day of Judgement, the signs of Allah in the natural world, the fate of those who rejected the messengers before them, and the mercy and forgiveness of Allah for those who believe.

The Surah opens with two Arabic letters Ya (يا) and Seen (سين) which are among the Muqatta'at, the disconnected letters of the Quran whose full meaning is known only to Allah. The name Yaseen comes from these two letters.

يـٰسہ
Ya-Seen
"Ya Seen — these are Arabic letters whose precise meaning is known only to Allah."
(Quran 36:1)

Why Is Surah Yaseen Called the Heart of the Quran?

The title comes from a narration attributed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

إنّ لِكُلِّ شيءٍ قلبًا، وقلبُ القُرآنِ يس
Inna likulli shay'in qalban, wa qalbu al-Qur'ani Yasin
"Indeed, everything has a heart, and the heart of the Quran is Yaseen."
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi, 2887)

This narration is graded Da'if (weak) by some scholars including Al-Albani, and Hasan by others. However, the majority of classical scholars have accepted it for the purposes of encouraging Quran recitation — what Islamic scholarship calls fada'il al-a'mal.

Islamic scholarship distinguishes between Hadiths used for rulings (ahkam) and those used for encouragement in worship. A weak Hadith that encourages Quran recitation is generally permitted by most scholars for motivational purposes, as long as it is not presented as a guaranteed promise from Allah.

The 3 Most Authenticated Benefits of Surah Yaseen

1. Forgiveness for those who recite it at night

مَنْ قَرَأَ يس لَيْلًا ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ غُفِرَ لَهُ
Man qara'a Yasin laylatan ibtigha'a wajhillahi ghufira lah
"Whoever recites Yaseen at night, seeking the countenance of Allah, will be forgiven."
(Al-Tabarani, Al-Mu'jam al-Awsat also recorded by Ibn Hibban and Al-Darimi)

Scholars differ on its grade some classify it Hasan (good), others Da'if (weak) but the majority of classical scholars accepted it for encouraging nighttime recitation. The best time for this is between Isha and Fajr, and many Muslims make it their habit to recite Surah Yaseen before sleeping, seeking forgiveness for the day's shortcomings.

2. Recitation beside those who are dying

اقْرَأُوا يس عَلَى مَوتَاكُمْ
Iqra'u Yasin 'ala mawtakum
"Recite Yaseen over your dying."
(Sunan Abi Dawud, 3121 — graded Hasan by Al-Albani)

This is the strongest narration among all Surah Yaseen-specific Hadiths. It is widely practiced across Muslim cultures to recite Surah Yaseen beside a person in their final moments, comforting them with the Quran's message of mercy, forgiveness, and the reality of the next life.

3. The general reward of every letter of the Quran

مَنْ قَرَأَ حَرْفًا مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ فَلَهُ بِهِ حَسَنَةٌ، وَالحَسَنَةُ بِعَشْرِ أَمْثَالِهَا
Man qara'a harfan min kitabillahi falahu bihi hasanatun, wal-hasanatu bi'ashri amthalih
"Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah will receive a good deed, and a good deed is multiplied ten times."
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi, 2910 — Sahih)

Surah Yaseen contains 3,028 letters. One full recitation carries the reward of at least 30,280 good deeds at the minimum multiplier of 10.

What About Other Common Claims?

Several claims circulate widely — especially in South Asian and African Muslim communities. Islamic scholarly honesty requires addressing them directly.

Reciting Surah Yaseen 7 times for a specific benefit — No specific sahih Hadith. Permissible as general Quranrecitation, but specific guaranteed outcomes cannot be attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.

Reciting 41 times for marriage, wealth, etc.  No authentic narration. These specific counts are innovations without textual basis, though the recitation itself is always rewarded.

Equal to reciting the full Quran 10 times  Narrated by Tirmidhi (2812) but graded weak (da'if) by Al-Albani. Not used as reliable proof by major Hadith scholars, though accepted by some for encouragement.

Benefits specific to pregnancy or childbirth  No direct Hadith. The Quran's healing properties (Quran 17:82) apply broadly to all believers.

Reciting for someone who has passed away  Accepted by the majority of scholars based on general principles. Both positions are held by reputable scholars.

Surah Yaseen is one of the most beautiful chapters of the Holy Quran. Its real spiritual value does not need to be inflated with unverified claims. Recite it because it is the Quran. Recite it for the reward of every letter. Recite it seeking forgiveness at night. That is more than enough.

The Best Times to Recite Surah Yaseen

At night before sleeping  Supported by the Tabarani narration on seeking forgiveness. Most widely practiced across all Muslim communities globally.

After Fajr prayer  Narrated by Al-Darimi with a mursal chain, saying needs for that day will be fulfilled. Accepted by many Islamic scholars despite the chain's weakness.

On Fridays  General Friday Quran recitation is widely recommended in Islamic tradition.

Beside someone who is dying  Supported by Abu Dawud 3121 (Hasan). The most authenticated of all time-specific narrations for this Surah.

During hardship  Supported by many Hadiths on the Quran as healing and comfort (Quran 17:82).

Any time is valid. The reward of recitation applies regardless of timing.

How to Make Surah Yaseen a Daily Habit

Surah Yaseen takes approximately 15–20 minutes to recite at a measured pace. Here is a practical approach to making it consistent.

Choose one time and commit to it most Muslims choose either after Fajr or before sleeping. Consistency builds the habit faster than flexibility in the early weeks.

Start with listening if the Arabic is unfamiliar. Open the Islam365 app, go to Quran, select Surah 36, choose your Qari, and listen while following the transliteration. After 2–3 weeks of daily listening, the rhythm and words begin to come naturally.

Read with translation at least once a week. Understanding what Surah Yaseen actually says — about resurrection, divine mercy, and the signs of Allah transforms the recitation from repetition into connection. The Islam365 app shows translation in 9 languages simultaneously with the Arabic text.

Download the recitation before travelling. A hotel room, a long flight, or anywhere with poor signal should not interrupt a Surah Yaseen habit. Download it once in Islam365 for offline access and it is always with you.

Stack it with an existing habit. Recite after brushing your teeth at night, or immediately after Fajr before picking up your phone. Borrowing the strength of an existing habit makes the new one automatic within 2–3 weeks.
