The question
Assalamu Alaikum Mufti Sahib.
I am from 🇨🇦 Canada. I am in my late twenties, and everyone around me keeps asking when I am getting married! I know marriage is important in Islam, but I sometimes wonder what makes a marriage successful.
Is it mainly about having children, or is there a deeper purpose behind it?
The answer
Wa Alaikum Assalam, dear brother.
Marriage is much more than having children. It is about finding companionship, sharing life’s responsibilities, supporting one another and building a home based on love, mercy and understanding. A good husband and wife should help each other grow closer to Allah.
Allah Almighty says in the Quran:
“And He placed between you affection and mercy.”
Reference: Surah Ar-Rum (30:21).
And in the Quran, Allah (Azza wa Jalla) teaches us this beautiful Dua:
“Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.”
