Fasting

Hi.

Answered by Mufti Tabriz · 04 November 2026

The question

Hi. I am from 🇬🇧 the UK.

Every Ramadan, I stay away from food and water during the day, but after Ramadan I sometimes return to my old habits. I feel that I am missing something. How can I make fasting change me as a person, rather than just completing the fast every day?

The answer

Dear brother.

This is a very important question. Ramadan is not just about staying hungry and thirsty. It teaches us patience, self-control, gratitude and the importance of staying away from sins.

Try to carry the good habits of Ramadan into the rest of the year, even if you start with small steps. Consistency is more important than trying to change everything overnight.

Dear brother, Allah Almighty says in the Quran:

“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.”

Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183).

And in the Quran, Allah (Azza wa Jalla) teaches us this beautiful Dua:

“Our Lord, give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

Dua Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201).

May Allah accept our fasting, improve our character and help us remain steadfast throughout the year. Ameen.
