Dear Mufti Sahib, I am from ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฐ Pakistan.

The question

Dear Mufti Sahib,

I am from ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฐ Pakistan. There has been a disagreement between some family members, and now we hardly speak to each other. I have tried to make things better, but sometimes I feel that I am the only one making an effort.

Does Islam expect me to keep trying, even when the other person doesn't respond?

The answer

Wa Alaikum Assalam, dear brother.

I understand that family disputes can hurt deeply. Sometimes people say things in anger and then allow years to pass without speaking to one another.

Islam encourages us to forgive, make peace and maintain family relationships. You should not allow someone's behaviour to turn your heart towards hatred. At the same time, you can maintain respectful boundaries if necessary.

Dear brother, the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said:

"The one who maintains ties of kinship is not the one who merely reciprocates."

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 5991.

And in the Quran, Allah (Azza wa Jalla) teaches us to pray:

"Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith."

Dua Reference: Surah Al-Hashr (59:10).

May Allah remove bitterness from our hearts, reunite families and guide us towards forgiveness. Ameen.
