Assalamu Alaikum Mufti Sahib.

The question

Assalamu Alaikum Mufti Sahib.

I am from the 🇦🇪 UAE.

I love my parents, but sometimes we have different opinions about my life and decisions. When I try to explain myself, things sometimes turn into arguments.

Afterwards, I feel guilty because I know I shouldn't speak harshly to them.

What should I do when I disagree with my parents?

The answer

Wa Alaikum Assalam, dear brother.

First of all, it's good that you are concerned about your parents' feelings. Disagreements can happen in every family, but we should always try to control our anger and speak with kindness. You can express your opinion without raising your voice or disrespecting your parents.

Dear brother, Allah Almighty says in the Quran:

"And speak to them a noble word."

Reference: Surah Al-Isra (17:23).

And in the Quran, Allah (Azza wa Jalla) teaches us this beautiful Dua:

"My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small."

Dua Reference: Surah Al-Isra (17:24).

May Allah help us honour our parents and grant them His mercy. Ameen.

Reference Surah Al-Isra (17:23)
